Coopérative Essoubaia
A women’s cooperative initiated by women, supported by UNDP, FEUIL (Canada), and the Embassy of Finland. It is located in Sidi Mokhtar, a village situated 100 km from Marrakech on the road to Essaouira, in a region where carpet weaving is a key economic pillar.
Objectives:
- To organise women within a formal institutional structure.
- To promote regional heritage by placing traditional know-how at the service of human development.
- To introduce women to issues of management and marketing of their production.
- To encourage women to take an active role in public life.
Carpets of the region
Known as “Chichaoua” carpets, these rugs feature a red field and a black zigzag border. Traditionally, they have specific characteristics that allow complete freedom of expression for the weaver, expressed through:
- the absence of symmetry,
- the absence of framing,
- and the absence of any formal logic in the organisation of the field and the arrangement of motifs.
This freedom is intentional, as women of the region are among the few carpet artisans capable of executing highly complex motifs without preliminary drawings.
Chichaoua carpets are produced in the Tensift region, in the Haouz province of Marrakech, an area comprising several tribes.

Objectifs :
- Organiser les femmes au sein d’une institution formelle.
- Valoriser le patrimoine régional en mettant le savoir-faire traditionnel au service du développement humain.
- Initier les femmes aux enjeux de gestion et de commercialisation de leur production.
- Encourager les femmes à investir l’espace public.
Les tapis de la région
Connus sous le nom de tapis « Chichaoua », ces tapis à fond rouge et à lisière noire en dent de scie présentent traditionnellement des caractéristiques spécifiques qui offrent une totale liberté d’expression à la tisseuse. Celle-ci se manifeste par :
- L’absence de symétrie.
- L’absence de cadrage.
- L’absence de toute logique formelle dans l’organisation du champ du tapis et la conduite des motifs.
Cette liberté est volontaire, car les femmes de la région comptent parmi les rares artisanes capables d’exécuter des motifs très complexes sans croquis.
Les tapis Chichaoua sont produits dans la région de Tensift, province du Haouz de Marrakech, qui regroupe plusieurs tribus.
