Morocco’s enduring handmade rug traditions are as colorful as historied as the many communities you still find weaving today. Photographer René Fietzek brings this to life in a visual story of Tazenakht, a village located in the country’s High Atlas. This closer view of Moroccan culture and craftsmanship comes as STEP deepens its partnership with local government organization la Maison de l’Artisan toward supporting local artisans and preserving the country’s craft sector.

Morocco, a country with a rich heritage of carpet making, is home to some of the world’s most iconic handmade rug traditions, shaped by the Amazigh (Berber) peoples and other indigenous tribes. These age-old techniques have been passed down through generations, reflecting a deep cultural legacy.

This visual journey, captured through the lens of photographer René Fietzek, invites us to explore the beauty of Morocco—from its deserts to its mountains—while celebrating its diverse people, their craftsmanship, and the timeless art of carpet making. Fietzek’s photographs capture the colorful essence of the country and the artisans behind its crafts.

This article is shared in celebration of STEP’s growing partnership with la Maison de l’Artisan, which has seen the addition of many new STEP Certified partners in Morocco, including Albouyahyaouia, Atlas Rugs, Bazar Tadili, IDYR (Boucharouette Eco Creation), Catam, Kechart (My Rugy), Studio LID, Studio Sana Benzaitar, and WEBERBER. Together—STEP and local collaborators and Partners—are working to preserve the country’s rich craft heritage, enhance market access, and build a more equitable future for its artisans. We look forward to deepening our relationship with Morocco’s rich history of carpet making and to fostering long-term, equitable growth in the industry, especially among its vibrant weaving communities.
